Renewable energy – Landfill biogas

Biogas plants installed at waste landfills are a major contribution to the production of clean energy and participate in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

The solid waste (R.S.U.) that are landfilled are partly composed of organic substances, which inevitably through time, undergo a natural process of decomposition. After a first aerobic process (in the presence of oxygen) starting stages of anaerobic decomposition (in the absence of oxygen) that give rise to the process of ‘methanogenesis’. During this process, the bacteria transformed all the available carbon in methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2); the latter process has a long duration (which can also reach up to 20 years) with a production of methane decreasing over time.

The biogas is so formed in good part methane gas (40/50% approximately). It is a good source of energy to replace the traditional fossil fuels permitting, a significant reduction of the environmental impact limiting the emission of greenhouse gases.
The plant aimed at the recovery of biogas for the production of electrical energy can be divided into the following main components:

  1. Wells intake
  2. Network adduction; primary and secondary
  3. Pumping station / blower
  4. Drying biogas system
  5. Cogenerator
  6. Cooling dissipative or any recoveries thermal engine

FAR energia, thanks to the experience in the use of landfill gas, guarantees customers the best support from the initial preliminary analysis through to installation and commissioning of the plant; evidence are its more than 50 plants installed to date.
The typical configuration of the cogeneration plant from landfill is to install a cogeneration unit inside a container. FAR energia, depending on the size of the plant, has assembled engines in container normal or exceptional designed by herself or in facilities specifically designed insulated and soundproofed.
In Italy the energy produced by the landfill gas is subject to the incentive systems planned in MD July 6, 2012.
